Radioactive material management

Sealed radioactive sources are used widely in medicine, industry, and agriculture.

They consist of radioactive material that is encased in a capsule or bonded in a solid form to prevent the radioactive material from escaping or being released accidentally.

Sealed sources are integral to several processes:

  • Calibration sources for radioactive measuring equipment
  • Irradiators used to sterilize food and medical equipment
  • Mapping underground sources of water
  • Well logging in the exploration of oil & gas and other natural resources
  • Analytical equipment, such as gas chromatographs and liquid scintillation counters
  • Measurements of flow, density, moisture, and tank levels
