Providing Reliable Heat to 70K Students in the Coldest Metropolitan Area in the U.S.

Veolia helps University of Minnesota meet their heating needs

Located in the coldest major metropolitan area in the U.S., the vast Twin Cities campus is home to more than 70,000 students, faculty and staff, and includes the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

Veolia was selected to meet the heating needs of the campus by providing operation and maintenance (O&M) services at the two steam heating facilities.

Challenges of the operation included:

  • Meeting emission standards by the existing system — with equipment dating to the 1940's
  • Ensuring system reliability and proper system isolation during maintenance periods
  • Reducing the university's carbon footprint
