In coal-fired power production, byproducts such as flue gas desulfurization scrubber blowdown carry contaminants like arsenic, mercury, selenium that can pollute in a variety of ways. Protecting our waterways, ground water, drinking water, and the air from harmful exposure is a critical priority that can be difficult to manage.
In 2015, the EPA finalized federal limits on the levels of toxic metals in wastewater discharged from power plants. While proposals have been made to push the compliance date to 2028, the final rule establishes new and additional requirements for waste streams from processes and byproducts.
