Beneficial Use

SSO waste processing with anaerobic digestion

Starting up a new source-segregated organics processing facility

Founded on the success of its first source segregated organics (SSO) operation that had started up 10 years prior, the City of Toronto undertook a second plant to expand its Green Bin Organics Program. Toronto’s new Disco Road green bin processing facility is North America’s first full-scale municipal SSO waste processing operation to use anaerobic digestion.

Veolia, working as the operator of the facility and teaming with leading engineers, constructors, and licensees, achieved:

  • Completed facility ramp-up in record time

  • Operating continuously at 100% design capacity
  • Performing ongoing upgrades to increase facility reliability
  • Providing ongoing support for design/construction/operation of facility wastewater treatment plant
